German Village Art League (GVAL) is pleased to announce its 3rd annual “The Language of Art” juried exhibition, where visual art is paired with poetry. Hosted by The High Road Gallery , “The Language of Art” will take place June 1 through 25, 2011. The gallery is located at 12 E. Stafford Rd., Worthington.

"The Language of Art" features visual art complemented by ekphrasis poetry – the graphic, often dramatic description of a visual work of art in poem. Selected artwork will be assigned to a poet, who will produce a poem that reflects their experience with the art.

GVAL challenges visual artists to submit work that will inspire the poets’ pens. For centuries, visual art has influenced the way we see the world as has poetry. "The Language of Art" brings them together through an exploration of inspiration and nuance with sometimes unexpected and unintended results.

Dear Fellow German Village Art League Members and Friends,

As a member of the German Village Art League (GVAL) Board, I am pleased to share the highlights of a very successful 2010 with you. In the last four months alone, our accomplishments include:

• application for 501(c)(3) designation making GVAL a non-profit organization
• completion of the GVAL By-laws to formalize the operation of the organization
• presentation of three major exhibitions, including "The Language of Art," Carnegie Gallery, and December's All-Member exhibition “Illuminating Art"
•membership in German Village Business Community and German Village Society •Social Networking meetings where members meet other artists and share valuable information with each other
•Program meetings (AMF and Gallery Informal) to provide members with resources that help them master the business of art
• securing new relationships with organizations, galleries and businesses to expand exhibition opportunities for GVAL members

The GVAL board and committees are dedicated to making our organization more responsive to your needs as a member, while striving to restore German Village as the destination for the arts and artists in central Ohio. We are currently seeking
members who want to be at the forefront of our efforts and to help lead us into the future. As a member, you can help by volunteering on a committee or at the board level. We invite you to nominate yourself or another member for a committee or board role.

In 2010, the GVAL Board has contributed a great deal of time to the organization, working on behalf of us all. Please share in this incredible time of the GVAL and get involved by completing the nomination form below. Submit your nomination to

• 3d work must be smaller than 20 ”(h) x 20 ”(w)x 20”(w) and can be presented on a pedestal.
3. Title each jpeg "lastname1.jpeg" ex:"ross1.jpeg, ross2.jpeg, etc.
4. Each submission should be in jpeg format and no larger than 5"x7" 200ppi.

German Village Art League presents its second annual, The Language of Art in the Carnegie Gallery at the Columbus Main Library. This year's Visual Art Jurors are The Ohio Art League Gallery Director and Organization Administrator, Eliza Jones and Professor of Visual Communications at CCAD, Walter King. The Poetry Juror is Scott Woods and the curator is Stephanie Rond.

This year The Language of Art's poetry portion of the exhibit will also feature 34 poems based on artwork that has been juried and displayed in the exhibition...ekphrastic poetry! Poets were also juried and randomly matched with a piece of art. The poems will be exhibited next to each of the assigned artwork for the duration of the show. Poetry Reciting at 5:15pm Sept. 9th, 2010 in Carnegie Gallery.

HISTORY: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

Poets have used art as inspiration for centuries. John Keats’ “Ode on a Grecian Urn” is one famous example, but even ancient poets such as Homer have turned to artwork as a source of stimulation for their writing. Honor Moorman notes: "William Blake said that poetry and art are 'ways to converse with paradise' (Farrell 6). In the Phaedrus, Plato observes that when paintings and poems are put together, they 'seem to talk to you as if they were intelligent' (qtd. in Foster and Prevallet xv)... Georgia Heard calls language 'the poet’s paint' (65), and many other writers and artists have commented on the parallels between these two modes of expression." (46-47) In Heart to Heart: New Poems Inspired by Twentieth-Century American Art, Jan Greenberg explains her belief in “the power of art to inspire language” (4). She notes that “What the poet sees in art and puts into words can transform an image . . . extending what is often an immediate response into something more lasting and reflective.”

Ekphrasis or ecphrasis is the graphic, often dramatic description of a visual work of art. In ancient times it referred to a description of any thing, person, or experience. The word comes from the Greek ek and phrasis, 'out' and 'speak' respectively, verb ekphrazein, to proclaim or call an inanimate object by name.

With the support of friends of the Library, the Carnegie gallery creates unique cultural experiences for library visitors by presenting quality art exhibits. Exhibits are free, open to all, and feature the best work of both emerging and established artists.

VISIONS OF THE VILLAGE 2010

The German Village Society has partnered in the GVAL to help celebrate German Village's 50th Anniversary year, with a dual-venue event titled "Visions of the Village," showcasing the artwork of GVAL artists interpreting the famous neighborhood and hosted by The Archive Gallery and Caterina Ltd. Submission details: Artists are asked to submit 1 image of work which is his/her interpretation of German Village. All submissions will be selected for either the Archive Gallery or Caterina Ltd for the duration of the dual-venue event, "Visions of the Village."

Other Exhibitions in German Village during the month of March.

The German Village Society, Visions of the Village will be a show of the extensive art collection of the Society and personal collections of its Membership. The show will be featured in the German Village Society"s Warner Fest Hall. It will feature water colors, oil and photography and sculpture that represent scenes in the village over the years. This is not a sale but an exhibition.

This is one of many events that are a part of the GVS 50th Anniversary Year.

A wine and cheese reception will be held on Sunday March 21 from 2-5. The exhibit will be on display the following week(12-4) and the Saturday (10-2) and close on Sunday March 28 (2-5).

The unique fabric of German Village, including its businesses and restaurants, rich art tradition, and historical beauty will be blended together on Macon Alley for one magical Summer evening. More than 30 regional artists representing the German Village Art League will exhibit (and sell) their work inside Macon Alley garages, village shops and businesses will promote their varied offerings, and local restaurants will provide samples of their delicacies during the event. Plus live entertainment, cold adult beverages (n/a too) and your own opportunity to paint the canvas of the village!

GVAL’s first juried exhibition will be called Unify. Unify was juried by Nanette Maciejunes and Catherine Adams. Nannette is the Executive Director at the Columbus Museum of Art. Catherine Adams is the owner of Caterina Ltd. that will host our Unify.

Congratulations to Paul Rowntree -(Winter Grass Music, oil 12"x24") and Ed Elberfeld- (Hammer #7, photograph 16"x20") for receiving "Juror's Choice Awards" from the unify exhibition.

German Village Art League plans to host 2-4 juried exhibitions annually, honoring "Juror's Choice " and "Villager's Choice".

"Villager's Choice Award" will be announced at the end of the unify exhibition.

German Village Haus und Garten Tour 2009 Call for GVAL Artists

The German Village Haus und Garten Tour is an annual event filled with traditions and surprises, much like the neighborhood it showcases.

On Sunday, June 28, 2009, German Village will open its doors and garden gates for the 50th Annual Haus und Garten Tour, highlighting the exquisite gardens and historical renovations of German Village. We are hoping to engage the German Village Art League in this 50th anniversary. We want to make a big splash this year and have already started to do so by encouraging our residents and businesses to plant red geraniums in the yards, planters and window boxes. One additional “splash” we are hoping to make is a call for artists from the German Village Art League who would be willing to paint, sculpt, mold, draw, their interpretation of the red geranium. These interpretations will be on display at the Meeting Haus from the time we receive them until the end of the year. Pieces will be returned to the artists at the end of the year or if artists would like to donate their work, we will auction them at a German Village event this year. Proceeds will split between the Society and the GVAL. The artist’s supplies used for the creation can be considered a full tax deduction.

If we receive work from 10 artists or more, we will allot a full page in the anniversary Haus und Garten program to the German Village Art League, listing the artists’ names and an encouragement to visitors to view them. We would also very much welcome artists who would like to make their creation “live” on the day of the tour, so our guests can see the artists in action! On the day of the tour, we will strategically place these works of art, or the artists themselves creating their red geranium works of art, throughout the Village.

There are no limitations on dimension or materials for these works of art! They just must be representative of the red geranium. Be creative and be yourselves!

Currently numerous organizations in German Village including GV Art League have formed to organize the Art Crawl in 2009. The Art Crawl usually opens every other year to German Village artists. This year the Art Crawl supports GV Art League artists. We are looking for 8-10 volunteers from GV Art League to help organize "the art side" of the Art Crawl. Forty artists will take part in the newly formed German Village Art League's inaugural exhibition later this month.

Formed this past winter by German Village resident Ryan Orewiler, the league consists of about 40 artists from throughout the state and country.

The exhibition, titled "Unify," will run May 22 through June 28 at Caterina Ltd., 571 S. Third St. Works will be in various media, including pen and ink drawing, oil paintings and sculptures. About 50 pieces will be on display.

The works in the exhibition will be judged by Nannette Maciejunes, executive director at the Columbus Museum of Art, and Catherine Adams, owner of Caterina Ltd.

Orewiler, a painter, said he formed the league to help local artists meet each other to share ideas and gain inspiration; hence the name of the exhibition.

"There are a lot of artists that tend to stay in their studio and not communicate, and I think communication is a crucial element to become a successful artist," Orewiler said.

He said he expected the group to grow quickly but was surprised at how fast the exhibition came together.

"I knew it was going to happen fast," he said, "but I didn't realize how many artists were going to be involved."

Among the artist taking part in the show will be Clintonville resident Stephanie Rond.

She will have pieces from her series "War on Beauty" on display. The painting is acrylic on canvas with air brushing.

"Most of my artwork tends to be considered lowbrow art," she said.

Rond, who has a fine arts degree, said pieces from the series are an attempt to marry street art with fine art.

Rond said she wanted to join a group at the beginning stages.

"That's what drew me to it, because it's brand new," Rond said. "It's interesting to be involved in one that is starting from the ground up."

Though fairly new, the group has already begun making inroads into the community. Besides the "Unify" exhibition, the group is helping organize the annual Art Crawl event.

German Village Art League plans to host two to four juried exhibitions annually, honoring "Juror's Choice" and "Villager's Choice."

Adams said she jumped at the idea of hosting the league's first show.

"One of the reasons I started the gallery was to provide exposition space to artists who would not otherwise be seen," Adams wrote in an e-mail. "There are so many gifted artists in and around German Village and I am excited to see them come together."
